First wins for the Angels

Marsh’s Angels have continued their league campaign in the D Division. The team was in action at home to Thornaby Juniors in a home match at the end of February. Nicky Britton playing on board 3 was able to score a milestone victory both for herself and for the team in her match against Finn Whitefield. Though Finn managed to secure an advantage out of the opening, Nicky was able to launch a decisive attack on the kingside in the middlegame, which was founded upon effective piece coordination between her queen and bishop. Unfortunately, our other three players, Katie Sidgwick, Rebecca Horlock and Catherine Lloyd fell to defeat on the remaining boards on account of some dynamic play by their opponents, meaning that ultimately it was the Juniors who would run out 3-1 winners.

Following this, the team traveled to Darlington for an away match against the Darlington D team in March. Katie Sidgwick pulled off an impressive win on board 1 which was her first win in rated classical chess. This result was also a significant feat for the team, as it was the second ever rated victory for an Angels player in a league match. The match overall would end in a 3-1 defeat for the team. However, all of the signs are that a positive overall match score is not far away with the progress that is being made in practice and competitive matches by the Angels players.
